Description: Get Ready for the Fun Stuff! This seminar will highlight the recreation facility requirements covered by the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design issued by the Department of Justice (DOJ). A detailed look at the scoping and technical requirements for amusement facilities, recreational boating facilities, fishing facilities, miniature golf and golf facilities, sports facilities, play areas, and swimming pools and spas will be provided. Additionally, the seminar will address the outdoor developed areas standard which includes scoping and technical requirements for trails, picnic and camping facilities, viewing areas, and beach access routes on federal land covered by the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA). Finally, a discussion on identifying the appropriate requirements for exterior routes including; accessible routes, pedestrian access routes, shared use paths, beach access routes, and pedestrian trails.

Attendees will learn:

  • An understanding of the minimum accessibility requirements for newly constructed and altered recreation facilities covered by the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.

  • The ability to evaluate existing recreation facilities for compliance with the standard.

  • An understanding of the minimum accessibility requirements for newly constructed and altered outdoor developed areas covered by the ABA.

  • Know where to locate technical assistance resources for recreation facilities and outdoor developed areas.

  • The ability to identify and understand the requirements for different exterior routes

William R. Botten

Accessibility Specialist at US Access Board, Office of Technical and Information Services

Bill Botten, an Exercise Physiology graduate from the University of Kansas, joined the US Access Board in May of 2000. Previously, he was Director of the Office of Accessible Seating/Services for Centre Management, a national sports arena management company. His responsibilities included ensuring compliance with State and Federal accessibility requirements at all managed properties, as well as working with design and construction officials during arena construction and alterations. His training experience includes hundreds of presentations over the last 30 years to local, state, and national audiences on injury prevention, disability awareness and sensitivity, and accessibility issues.

He was part of a team that developed the new combined guidelines for the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Architectural Barriers Act. Bill specializes in access issues related to recreation facilities and is the lead staff for the Outdoor Developed Areas rulemaking.
