Description: This course introduces the basics of accessible design, a concept that preceded universal design. Public accommodations are a critical domain for universal design because they are the location of key social participation activities. This course discusses the historical background of accessible design, state-of-the-art accessibility in public accommodations today, and the need for universal design to supplement accessibility codes and standards. The course describes universal design strategies for the design process and business practices, as well as the design of public rights-of-way, site, parking areas, entries, space planning, ramps, stairs, and restrooms.
