Description: Enabling people to access digital information in an accessible way is why we do what do we do as accessibility professionals. As such, it is essential to involve actual users in the process of accessibility evaluation, in order to get the best results. In this session, we will run through the process of a planning, and running, a diverse user test for digital content. This webinar will outline the core components of running a user based accessibility test on your app or website, covering topics from selecting users, and drawing up tasks, to moderating the test, and presenting the findings. Also covered will be available technology for both desktop and mobile testing, videos of a mock user test, and general good practise when working with users.

Objectives

  • Describe the pros and cons of the different types of user test

  • Demonstrate welcoming users into testing session

  • Describe the benefits of a user test in addition to more standard accessibility evaluation

Joe Chidzik

Senior Accessibility Consultant

Joe started working in accessibility in 1995, for Widgit Software. The focus of this job was supporting teachers using communication aid software for both children and adults with communication difficulties. Since 2002 Joe has worked at AbilityNet as a Senior Consultant, where his main role is evaluating websites and applications for accessibility through involvement in the development process and strategically by writing accessibility standards and policies. He also helps in delivering webinars and workshops looking at accessibility as it relates to the different roles in organisations, from managers, to developers to content writers.

Raphael Clegg- Vinnell

Accessibility Consultant, AbilityNet

Raphael has been an accessibility and usability consultant at AbilityNet since 2013 and has worked on projects with a wide range of clients including Barclays, BBC and The Guardian. Current work includes organising and conducting user testing sessions, running client workshops with designers, developers and UX teams, design reviews, and advising developers and designers on how to create accessible/usable digital products and services. Raphael graduated from Middlesex University with a degree in web development, with his dissertation focusing on mobile UX. He regularly attends UX, interaction design and service design conferences and has a keen interest in emerging technologies.
