Many people recovering from serious mental illness, cognitive challenges, and substance use want to obtain employment and build a career path.  Individual Placement and Support (IPS) has the strongest evidence base with 25 randomized controlled studies demonstrating that two to three times more people gain employment with IPS support than with other traditional vocational approaches.  In this presentation, Deborah Becker will briefly review the IPS practice and principles, the research, and implementation strategies.  She will describe cross-system issues, such as funding these services, state agency agreements, and the role of a national learning community, which has accelerated implementation and dissemination.

Webinar Objectives:

  • To define the evidence-based practice called IPS
  • To briefly review the research that supports the practice
  • To describe the eight foundational principles of the evidence-based practice
  • To describe implementation factors at the federal level, state level, local agency level, and program level
  • To discuss the role of employment/education with early intervention
  • To describe how learning communities are a strategy for increasing access and expanding and sustaining services
