“Beyond Counselor Identity: Driving Meaningful Change through Professorial Advocacy and Engagement”

The issue of professional counselor identity has consumed rehabilitation counselors for over 30 years, resulting in the neglect of other critical issues (i.e. poverty, health care, labor market participation) negatively impacting people with disabilities. Importantly, this myopic focus on counselor identity has reduced the impact and scholarship of rehabilitation counseling to the point of irrelevance. In an effort to rehabilitate the profession, the focus of rehabilitation counseling needs to expand beyond counselor identity and start to address substantive issues that have broad impact, produce meaningful change, and improve the lives of people with disabilities. Rehabilitation Counselor Educators who have the capacity to drive change through advocacy and engagement must catalyze this change.
