Making Accessibility a Design Problem

Date: Thursday, November 29, 2016
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Eastern (UTC – 5 hours)
Length: 1.5 hours
Speaker: Alastair Campbell, Director of Accessibility, Nomensa
Target Audience: Accessibility professionals, developers, designers, testers, and anyone involved in the delivery of websites and web content to the general population
Skill Level: Intermediate

Overview: A lot of accessibility issues are created before the development stage, whether it is from the organizations brand guidelines, technology choices or the design. This webinar aims to bring forward the thinking on accessibility to the design stage, by designers. Based on many workshops with designers and developers, there are ways of explaining accessibility that make sense during the design process. Rather than an abstract check-list, you can group accessibility requirements into four 'interactions' so that it is easier to design for. We will arm you with tactics and techniques to get designers and UX people thinking about accessibility from their first sketch

Objectives:

  • How to persuade people to consider accessibility earlier

  • How to describe accessibility issues in interaction terms

  • Which checks and definitions can be used during the design process

  • Techniques designers should be using

Alastair Campbell, Director of Accessibility, Nomensa

With a background in psychology and an expert in human-computer interaction, Alastair Campbell is a leading light in the understanding of where man meets machines. He is driven by a desire to make the digital world accessible through the best possible user experience. In 2001 he helped establish Nomensa, where he is the director of accessibility and a user experience practitioner. He also works tirelessly on exciting new research and development projects to continually discover new methods and innovations to help people get the most out of online technology. His career milestones include pioneering the use of web standards within Nomensa and formulating and conducting thousands of usability and accessibility tests. In the latter case he has helped uncover how well people are being served by the technology they use. In all too many cases, the news isn't good, but Alastair is determined to change that. For example, he lead the creation of an accessible Content Management System. This has led to work with some of the UK's biggest brands across both the public and private sectors, including Sky, DirectGov, British Gas, the BBC and the British Library.
