Description: This course equips participants with essential concepts, reference materials and job aides for conducting timely, consistent and accurate plan review for access compliance. The course is oriented to Chapter 11B of the California Building Code.

  • This one-day course provides a framework around the DSA plan review process for access compliance and equips participants with the essential concepts, reference materials and job aides for conducting timely, consistent, and accurate plan reviews. Throughout the course, participants have the opportunity to apply access code regulations against case studies and exercises. The course emphasizes procedures throughout the plan review process as a means to set expectations for anyone involved in plan review or development to ensure access compliance in the built environment.

  • Topics:

    • Application of scoping versus technical code sections.

    • Difference between accessible route, path of travel and circulation path.

    • Requirements for new construction, additions and alterations.

    • Review of typical errors or omissions.

    • Reference materials provided by the Division of the State Architect.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the class students should be able to:

  • Understand the enforcement authority for the 2016 California Building Code

  • Understand how to analyze and apply the 2016 California Building Code provisions during the plan review process.

  • Compare and contrast requirements of the California Building Code with other applicable government regulations, resulting in an increased awareness of disability access rights law.

  • Review construction documents for access compliance using the latest version of the California Code of Regulations, Title 24, Part 2, Volume 1, Chapter 11B.
