Course Description

This course presents an overview of the strategic role and responsibilities of the ADA Coordinator.  Each of the five Titles under the ADA is presented and explored.  Case law and real-life scenarios are used throughout the course.  Weekly online discussions allow for application of concepts taught as well as for networking with peers and instructors. One mandatory virtual live classroom will occur on a weeknight during the four weeks. If unable to attend, an alternate project will be assigned.

Learner Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:

  • summarize the prevalence & impact of disabilities.
  • apply proper etiquette with people with disabilities.
  • discuss ADA as a civil rights issue.
  • recognize the need for and the benefits of Universal Design.
  • apply the definition of disabilities to their work.
  • differentiate between the five titles of the ADA.
  • discuss the responsibilities of an ADA Coordinator or ADA Professional.
  • recognize the qualities that make an effective ADA Coordinator or ADA Professional.
  • describe some of the tasks an ADA Coordinator or ADA Professional would typically be responsible for.
  • discuss beginning steps to designing a plan to improve access with a self-evaluation plan and a transition plan.
  • relate to others that every organization could potentially benefit from having an ADA Coordinator.
  • apply proper definitions of terms in the field of disabilities.
  • differentiate between the five titles of the ADA.
  • summarize the ADA law as it applies to service animals.
  • locate the 2010 ADA Standard.
  • appraise various real-life situations for proper application to the ADA.

Lisa Reburn, PhD

Project Director for the Division of eLearning and Professional Studies

Reburn collaborates with individuals across campus in the development and completion of major projects and tasks. She also serves in the Division as the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Coordinator where she assists with accessibility issues related to online learning. Reburn came to UAB in April 2013 from the University of North Alabama where she served as ADA Coordinator. She was previously at UAB as full-time faculty from 2007-2011. During this time, she served as the Director of an academic certification project within The School of Optometry and was the principal investigator and administrator of a federal personnel preparation grant during that time. Reburn has over twenty-five years’ experience teaching and working with individuals with a wide variety of disabilities. Reburn holds a B.S. in Elementary Education, and a M.A. in Special Education, Visual Impairments from Florida State University. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Special Education. She also holds several relevant certificates and endorsements. Dr. Reburn has been deeply involved in the founding and development of several projects, including a non-profit foundation, three projects involving the Alabama Governor’s office, programs to assist traumatized children and advocacy efforts to work with medical organizations to reduce morbidity and mortality of newborns.

Graham Sisson

State of Alabama ADA

Mr. Sisson has been an attorney for over 24 years and State of Alabama ADA coordinator since 1993. He has been a full time wheelchair user since a 1982 motor vehicle collision caused by a drunk driver. He is a 1987 graduate of the University of North Alabama and a 1990 graduate of Vanderbilt Law School. He is working on a doctorate in rehabilitation at Auburn University.

Mr. Sisson hopes to increase the knowledge of ADA professionals nationally and, thus, increase accessibility and opportunities for individuals with disabilities. This goal is the primary reason he and Dr. Reburn created the ADA Professional Certificate Program at UAB.
