I have played Mystery Manor as both a casual and a serious player for the better part of the Cretaceous period, and for the first six months of that time, I actively used diamonds as a currency. Every time I found some, I felt compelled to spend them immediately, on anything and everything that had them as a currency. At 1 AM, if I had to choose between completing the Kitchen one more time to get some extra energy or going to sleep, I would complete the Kitchen. I did not end up sleeping anyway.

This post is as much of a confession as it is a guide. First, let's go over what diamonds are actually useful for.

Diamonds are the game's premium currency, and they can be used to buy energy, any items you're missing for a collection, extra time for time trials and timed rooms, special access to some rooms, and other assorted things. The issue is that there are a ton of things you want to buy with them, and the game is really good at making you feel like you need them right now. That said, there's a certain philosophy in using them, which I stole from a friend who plays this game far more strategically than I ever have. If you're in a situation where you're spending diamonds because you want something immediately, don't spend them. If you're spending them because there's literally nothing else you can get that will help you, then spend some. Now, on to the actual ways of earning them.

1. Logging in to Mystery Manor every single day, even if just for 40 seconds.

2. Completing achievements

Go to your achievements page and look at it. Look at it again in a few days; there's a very real chance that you were three monsters away from getting a substantial chunk of diamonds that you literally would've received by accident by the end of the week. The trick to this is that, once you know what's on the achievement list, you can direct your gameplay to focus on those particular things. The exchange rate on friends is really pretty good; I send gifts out every morning like a digital UPS driver, and my reward mailbox is always full. There are Facebook groups and Reddit threads full of people who share their IDs, so go be social, it'll only take ten minutes, and then you can go back to being a homebody like me.

6. Offers and watching ads (with a few caveats)

Depending on your region and platform, offers can be a fantastic way to get extra diamonds, usually by watching videos or trying out other games. Watching videos is always a guaranteed way to get extra diamonds; I do it when the kettle is on, really. However, it's essential to read the fine print on the offers; some of them will attempt to trick you into signing up for a free trial that charges you in seven days. I nearly fell for one, and it was quite a task to cancel out of it. Use a throwaway email if you can, and set calendar reminders if you're on the fence about one. 7. Killing monsters and grinding rooms

Some monsters drop diamonds, and some room difficulties have a better reward rate than others. In short, if you're going to spend energy on grinding, spend it on rooms and monsters that are useful to you. I keep a note on my phone with all the things I've noticed about the game on, including a small list of what rooms have given me the most rewards when I've explored them. This is an unscientific list based solely on observation. It serves its purpose, however, and the one thing I can say for certain is that I have no idea if any of it is true.

Since room reward rates are tweaked from time to time, what might have been a good room to explore last year might not be the best room to explore this year.

Use your common sense and pay attention to your own gameplay rather than what people wrote about it in 2015.

8. Avoid at all costs the "free" diamonds

This one is a warning, really, rather than a tip, and it's here because I care about your well-being. Any website, YouTube video, or APK file claiming to give you free diamonds is almost certainly fake, a scam, or malware, or all three. There is no hack, exploit, or "free" account that gives you diamonds. The next time you see one of these, take it as a challenge to not click on the link or download the file. This is the difference between panicking at the end of the week and having no diamonds and not knowing what to do, and having a nice cache of them and being able to really enjoy an event.
