How to Get Phasmophobia Hack Money and XP: My Personal Tips

Hey fellow ghost hunters! 👋
Okay, so let me just start by saying I used to be broke in Phasmophobia. Like, "can't even afford a flashlight, please don't let the ghost hunt" broke. My friend Dave still jokes about the time I walked into Tanglewood with nothing but a smudge stick and a dream because I'd blown all my cash on motion sensors I kept placing wrong. Spoiler: I died. A lot.
But after countless hours, some genuinely terrifying moments (I will never recover from that basement Banshee that hunted at exactly the wrong moment), and a lot of trial and error, I’ve finally figured out how to actually make money and level up without losing my sanity. Well, my in-game sanity anyway. So grab your EMF reader, and let me share what's worked for me!
Find Your "Goldilocks" Difficulty
Okay, here's the thing: when I first started trying to grind cash, I made the classic mistake of jumping straight into Professional difficulty thinking "more money = more better!" NO. I just died faster and came away with a grand total of $17 for my trouble.
How to Get Phasmophobia Free Money & XP What actually worked for me was finding my comfort zone first. For a while, that was Intermediate on small maps like Tanglewood and Willow Street. Get the ghost right, snap a couple of photos, maybe pick up the bone, and you're walking away with a decent haul without the constant imminent death threat.
Then, slowly, I crept up to Professional. Now I mostly live on Professional because the multiplier is nice, but I still won't touch Nightmare or Insanity alone unless I'm feeling particularly brave (or foolish, according to my teammates). The key is: a perfect investigation on Intermediate pays way more than a dead one on Nightmare. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
The Weekly Challenge Is Your Best Friend
I slept on this for SO LONG and now I'm kicking myself. Every single week, there's a challenge that'll give you $3,000 and 5,000 XP. That's HUGE, especially early on. Some weeks they're genuinely fun (I loved the "slow and steady" one), and some weeks they're terrifying abominations (looking at you, "no evidence" runs).
Phasmophobia Free Money & XP But here's my ritual now: every Monday, I check the weekly challenge before I do anything else. Even if it takes a few tries, it's always worth it. That $3,000 bought me so many crucifixes I could practically wallpaper the ghost room.
Photos Are Where the Money's At
Alright, gather round because this is my favorite rant. The photo system in this game is both my greatest love and my mortal enemy. You know that feeling when you've taken the most beautiful picture of a ghost writing in the book, and the game goes, "hmm, best I can do is 1 star disturbed salt"? INFURIATING.
BUT. Once you figure out its quirks, photos become your money printer. Here's what I've learned:
- Interaction photos are reliable money. Ghost throws a plate? Snap it. Door moves? Snap it. The game seems to love these.
- Burned crucifixes and dirty water never fail me. I literally get excited when the ghost turns on a sink now. My life has come to this.
- The ghost photo is the holy grail but a huge gamble. Keep that camera on you during a hunt or a ghost event. My best tip? Wait for an event where it stands still, not a hunt where it's speed-walking toward you ready to unalive you.
Quick funny story: I once got a perfect 3-star ghost photo during a hunt because I was trapped in the corner of a nursery and just snapped wildly out of panic. Did I survive? Absolutely not. Did that photo pay for my next three investigations? You bet it did. Worth it? ...Maybe not, but my friends still laugh about my scream.
Stop Forgetting the Bone
I have ADHD, and apparently, so does my Phasmo character because for the longest time I would just... leave the bone. Walk right past it. Focus on the ghost, get my evidence, oh look an interaction photo, okay we're done, let's go to the van, completely forgetting there's a whole pelvis on the floor worth XP and cash.
Now I literally say out loud "WHERE'S THE BONE?" the moment we identify the ghost room. It's become a thing in my group. We have a bone hunting song now. We're not normal people anymore.
The Three Objectives: Do Them or Die Trying (Literally)
I used to get two objectives done and go "eh, good enough." DON'T BE LIKE ME. That third objective can sometimes just be like "get a ghost photo" which you're already trying to do. Other times it's "escape a hunt" which... well, that'll probably happen whether you want it to or not, honestly.
But sometimes it's "use incense during a hunt" or "get an average sanity below 25%" and those require a bit of planning. My advice? Check them in the van before you pick your equipment. If you need low sanity, bring pills and hang out in the dark for a bit. If you need a hunt, well... just wait. The ghost will eventually get tired of your ghost-writing-book-placing attitude and try to murder you.
Perfect Games Are Great, But Don't Obsess
A perfect game on Professional with all photos, bone, and objectives can net you around $200-300 per run. That adds up fast! But here's where I'll be honest: I almost never get perfect games solo. The photo system is just too finicky for me without a teammate backing me up.
So I aim for "pretty darn good" instead. Get the ghost right, do the objectives, grab the bone, and take as many decent photos as I can. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good, especially when a hunt starts and you need to hide in a closet for three minutes questioning all your life choices.
Bring Friends, Bribe Them with Your Enthusiasm
Everything in this game is easier with friends, including making money. More people means more hands to carry equipment, more eyes to spot interactions, and more people to blame when the bone doesn't get picked up (sorry again, Dave).
But seriously, playing with even one other person makes the game so much more efficient. You can split tasks—one person watches for the ghost, the other runs for photos. Plus, if you die, they can still finish the contract and you get insurance money! Just a little. But hey, $50 is $50.
Quick Fire Tips Before I Go:
- USE YOUR EQUIPMENT. A T1 thermometer costs $0 to add, and it helps you find the ghost room without freezing to death in the hallway. There's literally no downside.
- Smudge sticks save careers. If you hear a hunt starting, light one up and book it. They're not just for objectives.
- Small maps are for grinding, large maps are for vibes. Want fast money? Stick to houses. Want to feel like you're in a horror movie? Take on the prison or school, just don't expect efficiency.
And honestly? The best tip I can give you is to just enjoy it. Some of my favorite gaming memories are from this ridiculous ghost hunting game—the times we all screamed in unison, the time my friend thought the ghost was singing and it was actually just me on proximity chat, the time I confidently told everyone it was a Shade and it immediately hunted and killed all three of us. That's the good stuff.
Money and XP will come naturally as you get more comfortable. Just don't be like early-game me, broke and terrified, trying to find ghost orbs with a glow stick because I couldn't afford a video camera.
Now if you'll excuse me, there's a new weekly challenge to fail at. Wish me luck! 🕯️👻
Stay spooky (but not too spooky),
Your favorite very-okay ghost hunter
