Listen, I've been playing this ridiculous game for way too long. Longer than I should probably admit to a stranger on the internet. I was there for the weird summer event with the dancing mushrooms (what was THAT about??) I was there for the banner I absolutely should not have blown all my gems on (we will get to that trauma in a minute) and I was THERE the day I finally pulled my first Mythic after hoarding gems for two whole months like a little dragon. I ugly cried. My dog judged me. Zero regrets.

So no, this isn't one of those "TOP SECRET PRO STRATS" posts from some mega whale with a maxed out account. This is from your fellow slightly impatient, chronically forgetful, must save for "the perfect banner" gamer who has learned a few things the hard way. Mostly the hard way.

So grab a snack (I have a family size bag of chips next to me. No I will not share.) and let's chat.

First things first. Let me save you from the mistake that haunts me to this day.

Ohhhh we gotta get this out the way.

Picture it: New shiny banner dropped. Looked SO GOOD. The new hero was doing that little spin in the preview, had the cool glowy sword, the whole nine yards. The game was like "LIMITED TIME! ONLY A FEW DAYS!" and my dumb little brain went "Oh no. This is IT. If I don't pull now I will NEVER get them."

I had about 620 gems saved up. My precious, hard earned, didn't spend them on anything gems.

Gone. In like...ten minutes.

And you wanna know what I got from those pulls?

Three copies of some rare I already had maxed. A pile of shards for a hero I actively dislike. And not a single glimpse of the one I wanted.

Not even a pity pity crumb.

I stared at that screen whispering "noooooo" like I was in a movie. My husband walked by, took one look at my face and goes "Banner?" and I just nodded solemnly.

That was the day I learned: If the banner is making you feel panicky? It's working. Walk away for a hot minute.

So lesson numero uno before we get to the "how to get them" is: don't spend your gems just because the timer is doing a little freak out. The timer is lying to you. That hero will come back around. I promise. (She did come back around. I still didn't get her. But that's a me problem.)

Okay. Trauma over. Let's get to the goods.

Where the heck do Gems come from in this game anyway?

Gems are the spicy little currency aren't they? The ones we hoard like gremlins. The ones that mock us when we open a free chest.

Epic Heroes War Free Gems and Gold Here is where I've actually found them over the years (the ones that don't require my credit card crying):

1. The Daily Missions. I know. I KNOW.

Listen I am the world's worst at remembering dailies. There have been whole stretches where I open the game, do my dailies, get distracted by something shiny in my inventory and close the app without collecting them. For DAYS.

Don't be like Past Me.

That little "claim" button is free gems my friend! It is literally leaving money on the table!

I have it as a habit now. Phone dings at me to open the game, I go "ugh fine" open it, collect dailies, then get sucked in for an hour. Works every time.

They add up. 10 gems here, 20 gems there. Over a month? That's a good chunk of a pull.

2. Events are your best friend. No seriously.

This is not even an exaggeration. Some of the BEST gem payouts I have ever gotten have come from the silly little limited time events.

The one where we had to feed the weird little glowy creatures? I thought it was annoying and then BAM 300 gems at the end for completing it.

Epic Heroes War Free Gems and Gold The log in events? Ohhh the 7 day log in events are gold. (literally and gem wise) I will literally set an alarm on my phone if I know a good log in event is happening and I know I'm going to be busy that day. I have done this. No shame.

My pro tip for events: Don't just brush them off because they look like a chore. Even the "collect X thingies" ones. I always do them now because 9 times out of 10 they give a nice gem reward at the milestones.

3. Achievements. The ones you forgot existed.

Okay raise your hand if you have 800 achievement points sitting there unclaimed. (My hand is so high up right now.)

I was scrolling through the achievement list the other day being nosy at what was there and realized I had a whole pile of gems just waiting for me for things I had already done! Defeated X amount of enemies? Got it. Leveled up heroes? Got it. I was basically sitting on a gem piñata and hadn't hit it.

Go poke around in there right now. I bet you have some free gems. Go on. I'll wait..... got em? Good.

4. Arena. My weekly love hate relationship.

Oh Arena. I both love you for the gems and gold and hate you because Lord Whats-His-Name with the perfectly stacked defense team keeps whooping me with his level 60 whatever.

But even if you're like me and bounce between rank 3-5 and mostly get mildly annoyed by it, the daily/weekly arena rewards are so worth doing.

I make sure I at least do my 5 fights a day. Even if I'm having a "my team is not cooperating with me" kind of day. Those gems stack up by the end of the week. Plus gold. Glorious gold.

Epic Heroes War Free Gems and Gold Pro tip from a very average arena player: I don't stress about climbing to the tippy top. I stress about just getting my fights done for the chest. My pride is slightly bruised sometimes but my gem stash is happier.

5. Main Story & Chapter rewards. (The ones we blaze past)

Listen when I first started the game I was mashing through story like my life depended on it. "Gotta see what happens next!" Completely ignoring the little gem rewards at the end of chapters.

Turns out, Past Me was leaving gems behind because she was impatient.

Now if I'm stuck on a chapter I'll still go back and make sure I've collected everything. Those chapter completions can be a sneaky little source.

6. Guild. Find yourself a good little crew!

Ohhhhhh this one took me way too long to figure out.

I was guildless for the first few months because I was shy and thought "Oh they'll be so much better than me." Listen, there are so many chill guilds out there full of people who also can't beat that one stupid level and are just there for the rewards.

Being in an active guild gives you guild chests, guild events, help with stuff. I get a nice little pile of gems from guild milestones and the daily guild things.

Also having people to complain to about the banner with is priceless. Shout out to my guildmates who have witnessed my meltdowns. You the real ones.

7. The Free Chests. All of them.

The hourly chest? I click it when I remember. The daily login chest? Obvious. The ones from leveling up? Claim em.

I used to ignore a bunch of these thinking "oh it's just a little gold" but they add up AND sometimes you get gems. Free is free baby.

I have my game on my phone and will sometimes just tap the hourly chest while waiting for my coffee to brew. Zero effort.

Okay, now the Gold. Oh sweet, sweet gold. I never have enough gold.

I swear I blink and all my gold is gone. Leveling up a hero? Chomp. Upgrading gear? Chomp chomp. Upgrading those darn skills? It eats it like a black hole.

So where does it come from?

  • Arena - this is a big one for me. Even when I lose a bunch, those fight rewards and chests give a solid amount.
  • Story stages - replaying stages you can beat easily is such a boring but effective way to farm gold. I throw on a podcast and auto battle some of the earlier levels when I'm desperate.
  • Events - again! Events love giving gold.
  • Selling junk - I used to hoard EVERY SINGLE THING. "But what if I need this level 2 grey sword in 47 years?!" I did not need it. Sell your unused gear. Especially the rubbish ones.
  • Daily quests - loads of gold in there.
  • Guild gifts - little gold bonuses come through too!

My most shameful gold farming moment? I was trying to max a skill and was like 80k gold short at like 11pm. So I sat there and auto farmed the easiest stage for a solid 35 minutes while watching reality tv. Did I feel slightly feral? Yes. Did I get the gold? Also yes.

My hard earned "DO NOT DO THIS" list. Learn from my stupidity.

I would not be a real gamer friend if I didn't warn you about the dumb stuff I've done.

  • DO NOT blow your gems on the "x10 pull" because you're "feeling lucky". I have never in my life felt lucky and then been lucky from this. It's a scammy little feeling.
  • DO NOT ignore the pity timer. Some banners have pity. Know it. Love it. Use it to your advantage. I track mine now like a weirdo with a sticky note.
  • DO NOT spend gems refreshing anything unless you're absolutely sure. Refreshing shop? No. Just no.
  • STOP falling for the "first time purchase" sparkle. We are talking about FREE gems here. Put your wallet away.
  • Do not waste gems speeding up things that are not time sensitive. Unless there is some crazy event that requires it, watching that timer go down is free. I know it's painful. I suffer with you.
  • Do not be like me and refuse to use your shard items because "I'm saving them for something" - USE. YOUR. SHARDS. I had a pile of random hero shards sitting in my inventory for months. Months! Just sitting there all sad. I finally used them and got a hero I actually really like from the fusion. Der.

My weird little rules I swear by now:

Okay after all this nonsense, I've developed some gamer quirks/rules to not go broke:

  1. The 500 gem rule. I will not pull on any banner unless I have at least 500 gems saved. That way if I whiff, I'm not down to crumbs.
  2. The "sleep on it" rule. See a banner I reallllly want? I wait 24 hours. If I still want it the next day and have gems? Okay maybe. If I forgot about it? Clearly wasn't that deep.
  3. Gold before ego. If I'm low on gold I farm. I don't care if the stage is boring.
  4. Always claim everything. Everything with a red dot. Every. Thing.
  5. Favorite hero fund. I have one hero I am actively trying to build. So if a banner has them? That's when I allow myself to look at my gems. Otherwise? Hard pass.
  6. Free stuff is a gift from the game gods. Log in. Do the thing. Click the chest. It takes two seconds.

My current "get gems" routine (the one I actually stick to because I'm lazy)

Real talk, I'm not out here grinding for 8 hours. I have a job, I have a dog who demands snacks and I get distracted by TikToks. So my realistic routine is:

  • Open game while coffee brewing: collect hourly chest, collect dailies, do my arena fights.
  • During lunch break (if I remember): quick peek, claim anything, maybe do event stuff.
  • Evening wind down: finish event missions for the day, do whatever story I'm on, collect chests.

That's it. Maybe 5-10 minutes a few times a day. And it WORKS. Slowly. But it works.

I just checked my gem count before writing this and I have 742 gems sitting there. All free. All from being a consistent little magpie collecting my shinies.

Final thoughts from your very impatient gaming friend

Listen, getting gems and gold in Epic Heroes War is a marathon not a sprint. I know. I am the LEAST patient person in the world. I want it all and I want it now. This game has personally taught me the art of waiting and the art of "no I will not spend my last 200 gems on this garbage banner."

Some weeks you'll feel rich. Some weeks the game will look you dead in the eyes and give you 300 gold from the big chest. It's rude. We take the L's and we keep collecting.

And hey, if you're currently in the trenches of a bad luck streak (I see you. I've been there for weeks. My last ten pulls were an insult.) I promise it will turn around. That Mythic is out there being stubborn. Save your gems for when it decides to show up.

Also tell me your weirdest free gem source! I just discovered the other day there was a random achievement for logging in for 30 days straight that I had somehow missed claiming. So now I'm curious what you've been sleeping on!

Okay I'm gonna go claim my dailies before I get distracted by making another cup of coffee.

You got this my friend. Be stingy with those gems. Don't let the flashy banner lie to you. And for the love of all that is holy, SELL THE GREY SWORD.

Talk soon,
Your fellow gem hoarding, slightly dramatic, chip eating Epic Heroes War gremlin.
