TYLER: Nothing impacts the American culture like the movies. However, deaf and hard of hearing individuals for many years have been deprived from this American experience - because we have not been able to understand what the movies are about. Until now. Theaters are starting to realize that they have an obligation under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act to provide captioned movies - thanks to the NAD's advocacy efforts both in and out of court. More and more theaters are providing captioned movies. Currently, as written, the law does not require a specific type of captioning - open or closed (glasses or individual devices). Theaters must provide something and be sure deaf and hard of hearing movie goers have equal opportunity to see the latest movies - and be able to understand them! Today, with the transition from film to digital movie production, there is even less excuse not to show captioned movies.
