Who We Are
Rebuilding Together SouthWest Illinois is a local affiliate of Rebuilding Together, a national organization that includes 166 affiliates serving 500 communities nationwide. Rebuilding Together’s national headquarters was launched in 1988 with a commitment to spread the program to every state.
In 1973, a group of neighbors from Texas decided to devote one day in April to repairing dilapidated homes of low-income, disabled, or elderly neighbors in their community. The idea spread quickly across the nation and Christmas in April was born.
In 1991, Christmas in April was introduced to the Madison County Tri-Cities area and later grew into what is currently Rebuilding Together SouthWest Illinois. With donations from United Way, corporate sponsors, and individuals, and the cooperation of hundreds of volunteers per year, over 400 homes in SouthWest Illinois have been made safe, warm, and dry.

Each year, hundreds of volunteers and donors feel the impact of helping their community. Volunteers leave the project homes exhausted, but with a wonderful feeling of joy and accomplishment at how we have improved quality of life for these homeowners. The appreciation expressed by the homeowners through their words and gestures makes all our efforts worthwhile.
The commitment made by most of our volunteers is only ONE SATURDAY a year for nine hours. Our volunteers include trades people from all walks of life who want to make a difference!
In partnership with local communities, Rebuilding Together SouthWest Illinois repairs and modifies the houses of low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly and disabled, so that they may live in warmth, safety, and independence.
