2010 California Standards for Accessible Design (excerpts relating to Safe Harbors only)

1117B.5 Signs and identification.  California's standards for signage are more stringent than Section 4.30 of the ADA Standards for Accessible Design.

1117B.5.5 Raised characters and pictorial symbol signs.  When raised characters are required or when pictorial symbols (pictograms) are used on such signs, they shall conformto the following requirements:

2.      Character size.  Raised characters shall be a minimum of 5/8 inch (15.9 mm) and a maximum of 2 inches (51 mm) high.

The requirements of 2010 CBC 1117B.5.5 are similar to 1991 ADAAG 4.30.4.  The requirements of 2013 CBC 11B-703.2.5 are identical to 2010 ADAS 703.2.5, and are more definitive than the earlier regulations.
