Description

May 22, 2018, 2:00 - 3:30 PM Eastern

Presented by TransCen, Inc. and the Mid-Atlantic ADA Center

Availability of textbooks, exams and other course materials in alternative text formats has made higher education accessible for many students with disabilities. Dan Newsome and Krithika Mutuguppe from the University of Maryland's Accessibility & Disability Service(link is external) (ADS) will take a comprehensive look at alternative formats at colleges and universities. This presentation will include a discussion of the history of alternative formats, including developments in new technology and the changes in production of alternative format documents over the years. We will learn the practices and procedures ADS uses to get necessary course texts converted into the high quality alternative formats that students need. Our speakers will look at major challenges (for example: STEAM - Science, Technology, Engineering (and the Arts) and Math for blind students) and hopes for alternative format production in the future. Time-permitting, participants from other institutions will be invited to contribute their ideas and practices to the discussion.
