6:00 pm - 9:00 pm PDT, April 08, 2015   |   Organized by: SOMArts

Description

Axis Dance Performance & DIS/PLAY Artists Panel

  • What: performance & panel to accompany the group exhibition DIS/PLAY
  • When: Wednesday, April 8, 6–9pm. 6pm exhibition tours, 7pm performance, film screening, 8pm panel.
  • Where: 934 Brannan St. (between 8th & 9th)
  • What Else: Free with RSVP on EventBrite.

Dig deeper into the themes of the group exhibition DIS/PLAY with docent-led tours, a performance by AXIS Dance Company and a panel discussion featuring dancers and exhibiting visual and media artists. The panel probes the limits of disability as a social construct and the ways that “performance” is an embedded and important facet of the disability experience. Click here to RSVP on EventBrite.

Our free-form discussion may illuminate common misconceptions and misunderstandings, and aims to challenge us all to think beyond our own persistent assumptions. From the concept of “passing” to the subtleties of exclusion and discrimination, we will ask how the notion that disability has a ‘performance’ aspect might be useful in the arts landscape? How might such questions inform our understanding of disability culture?

Event Schedule & Participants:
Join docent-led tours of the exhibition from 6pm to 7pm.

At 7pm AXIS Dance Company performs short, abstract contemporary pieces, followed by a screening of “The Gift (of Impermanence),” a 9 min. short film featuring dance choreographed by Alex Ketley. AXIS redefines traditional notions of dance, providing choreographers with the tools to explore a new movement vocabulary and expand their choreographic voice.

At 8pm the audience will be invited to join a 45-minute artist panel. In addition to AXIS Dance artistic director Judith Smith and dancers from the company, the panel includes exhibiting DIS/PLAY artists Todd Herman, Darrin Martin and Anthony Tusler. The panel will be moderated by Nina G.
