Affecting more than 11 million people each year\, Macular Degeneration is
a medical condition which is a major cause of blindness and visual impairm
ent in older adults ages 50 years and older. This debilitating damage to t
he retina\, known as Macular Degeneration\, can make it difficult or impos
sible to read or recognize faces\, although enough peripheral vision remai
ns to allow other activities of daily life. Macular Degeneration is a dise
ase that requires continuing educational resources and cutting edge techno
logy.\n\nWhite Cane Safety Day is a national observance in the United Stat
es\, celebrated on October 15 of each year since 1964. The date is set asi
de to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impai
red and the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence\, the w
hite cane. In 2011\, White Cane Safety Day was also named Blind Americans
Equality Day by President Barack Obama.\n
