DESCRIPTION:Course description\n\nUniversal Design (UD) also known as Desig
n for All or Inclusive Design is every year more and more integrated in pu
blic policies and private projects.\nAs more advanced countries have disco
vered\, UD is a key factort for sustainable development.\n\nThe concept of
Universal Design has evolved dramatically along the last years. Driven by
the synonymous\, but initially “rights-based” concept of Design for A
ll used mainly in Europe\, Universal Design is evolving from designing for
the needs of elder and disabled population towards designing for the resp
ect of human diversity in economic growth context considering all aspects
 of diversity (cultural\, gender\, sexual orientation\, abilities\, age\, d
imensions\, etc.).\n\nAnother key transformation can be found in the UD me
thods: professionals have evolved from “designing considering elder and
disabled persons” to “designing with people”.\n\nDue to all these ra
mifications UD can’t be considered as an isolated issue. UD is a key asp
ect of social sustainability to be valued as other crucial aspects (econom
y\, ecology and social cohesion among others) while designing policies\, l
aws\, services\, products or environments.\n\nThe course will describe how
the global concept UD can be put into practice in specific contexts\, whe
reby the methodology will be comparable even if the particular outcomes di
ffer.\n\nBy means of study visits\, tools and methods learned\, projects d
eveloped under each Module\, on-line discussions and the final project\, t
he student will be able to manage all aspects of the implementation of Uni
versal Design in all areas of the public and private sectors.\n\nLearning
outcomes:\n\nBy the end of the course the students will be able to work as
UD managers in the public sector or in private companies but also as UD c
onsultants\, in detail this implies:\n\n\n	\n	Understand the definition of
a good practice in UD and\, above all\, the complexity of adapting enviro
nments\, products and services to match with the very diverse expectations
and constraints of users and providers.\n	\n	\n	Understand the critical a
spects to succeed in designing and delivering services considering all asp
ects of human diversity.\n	\n	\n	Use in a professional way methods and too
ls for users’ involvement and co-design with users.\n	\n	\n	Identify and
prioritize the key factors to balance social\, economic and ecological as
pects in UD implementation.\n	\n	\n	Discover the Seven Interdependent Succ
ess Factors (7ISF) to design a project and to assess the services through
the analysis of existing good practice examples.\n	\n	\n	Discover worldwid
e cases of UD delivered by the administration\, the business sector and th
e social forces.\n	\n	\n	Ability to diagnose the improvements to be made i
n public space\, buildings\, transport means\, products and services with
the use of appropriate instruments and tools.\n	\n	\n	Ability to project a
retrofitting plan with the use of appropriate instruments and tools.\n	\n
\n	 Ability to act as a consultant for the implementation of UD in new u
rban planning\, buildings\, products and services and to use the appropria
 te instruments and tools.\n	\n\n\nMethod of presentation:\n\n\n	\n	Lecture
s and discussions: The lectures will provide the description of different
services\, socio-demographic elements and analysis methods supported by bi
bliography and images. During the lectures open discussion will be stimula
ted.\n	\n	\n	Class participation: Students will analyse in groups differen
t projects running in different contexts using analysis tools that will be
provided to them. In a second step extrapolation possibilities will allow
to check the transferability of UD methods.\n	\n	\n	Field studies: Visits
to companies and public spaces related to UD in Barcelona. In a second st
ep extrapolation possibilities will allow to check the transferability of
UD methods.\n	\n	\n	Oral presentations: Students are expected to present t
he results of their analysis or proposals with visual support.\n	\n\n\n F
 ield studies:\n\n\n	\n	As examples\, Barcelona’s public space\, building
s\, transportation services and companies\, the Design for All Foundation\
, Barcelona Design Hub\, Zicla and Access Safety\, among others. In a seco
nd step extrapolation possibilities will allow to check the transferabilit
 y of UD methods.\n	\n\n\nOrientation\n\nProfessional.\n\nLocation\n\nThe s
essions will be in Barcelona. \n\nTimetable\n\nFrom 2/10/2017 to 15/06/20
 18. The sessions will be along 6 weeks (monday to friday\, from 9-14 and 1
 6-20 h)\, starting October 2017 since June 2018\nMFP presentation:15 Septe
 mber 2018\n
