DESCRIPTION:Date/Time: May 5-6\, 2018\n\nLocation: Oak Ridge Hotel and C
onference Center\, Chaska\, MN.\n\nDescription: The Acoustical Society of
America is once again sponsoring an exciting event\, ASA School 2018\, w
here graduate students and early career acousticians in all areas of acous
tics can learn about and discuss a wide variety of topics related to the i
nterdisciplinary acoustical theme Living in the Acoustic Environment. ASA
School 2018 will provide opportunities for meeting faculty and fellow stu
dents\, discussing research topics\, developing collaborations and profess
ional relationships within acoustics\, and mentoring. \n\nASA School 2018
is a two-day course consisting of presentations by prominent acousticians
\, roundtables\, demonstrations\, and discussion groups to expand on the l
ecture materials and to foster communication across disciplines and techni
cal areas of acoustics. Social events\, including a Friday evening welcome
reception and Saturday evening dinner\, are also scheduled to provide an
informal setting for further discussions and social exchange. For addition
al information\, download reports covering ASA School 2012 and ASA Scho
 ol 2016.\n\n\n	\n	Evening welcome reception: Friday\, 4 May 2018.\n	\n	\n
ASA School: 5-6 May 2018\,  All day Saturday and Sunday immediately prec
eding the ASA Spring Meeting in Minneapolis.\n	\n	\n	All ASA School events
will be held at Oak Ridge Hotel and Conference Center located 30 minute
 s from Minneapolis.\n	\n\n\nOrganizers\n\nBrigitte Schulte-Fortkamp and Ju
dy Dubno have served as co-organizers for ASA Schools in 2012\, 2014\, and
2016. Stan Dosso joined as co-organizer of ASA School 2016.\n\n\n	\n	Brig
itte Schulte-Fortkamp - a Professor of Psychoacoustics and Noise Effects
in the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Engineering Acoustics of the Techn
ische Universität Berlin\, Germany.  Her research and teaching activitie
s include Psychoacoustics\, Acoustic Ecology\, and Soundscapes. Dr. Schult
e-Fortkamp has served as research professor at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology (MIT)\, Boston\, Osaka University\, and Université Pierre
et Marie Curie\, Paris. She is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of Ameri
ca. Dr. Schulte-Fortkamp’s current activities for ASA include serving as
the chair for Ad Hoc Committee on International Liaison and as a member o
f several ASA committees.  In 2011-2012 she served as ASA Vice President.
Currently she is serving as Vice-President of the European Acoustics Asso
ciation (EAA) and since 2013 as member of the board of the German Acoustic
al Society (DEGA). Dr. Schulte-Fortkamp is a Distinguished International M
ember of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (INCE USA). In 2010\,
she was awarded with the Hear the World Foundation award and in 2012 she w
as the recipient of the European Soundscape Award.\n	\n	\n	Judy R. Dubno -
a Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery
of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.  Her research
on human auditory function has been supported by grants from the National
Institutes of Health/National Institute on Deafness and Other Communicatio
n Disorders (NIH/NIDCD) since 1981.  Dr. Dubno’s current activities inc
lude serving as a member of several ASA committees\, the Board of Director
s of the American Institute of Physics\, the National Academies of Science
s Board on Behavioral\, Cognitive\, and Sensory Systems\, and the Board of
Directors of the Hearing Health Foundation.  She served as ASA President
(2014-15)\, as a member of the NIDCD Advisory Council of the NIH\, and as
President and Secretary-Treasurer of the Association for Research in Otol
aryngology.  She is a Fellow of the ASA and the American Speech-Language-
Hearing Association\, and the recipient of the James Jerger Career Award f
or Research in Audiology.\n	\n	\n	Stan Dosso - a Professor of Ocean Acous
tics and Director of the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the Univers
ity of Victoria\, Victoria B.C. Canada. His research interests center on t
he development and application of probabilistic inversion methods for acou
stic remote sensing of seabed geoacoustic properties and source localizati
on\, and related inverse problems in earthquake seismology. He is a Fellow
of the Acoustical Society of America\, Associate Editor (Underwater Sound
) for the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America\, and chair of  t
he fall 2018 ASA meeting in Victoria.  He served as the President of the
Canadian Acoustical Association (2003-07) and as Conference Chair for CAA
Annual Meetings in 1999\, 2010\, and 2012. He was awarded the ASA’s Medw
in Prize in Acoustical Oceanography in 2004\, and the University Science T
 eaching Excellence Award in 2006. \n	\n\n\nParticipants and Requirements\
n\nASA School 2018 is targeted to graduate students and early career acous
ticians (within 3 years of terminal degree) in all areas of acoustics. Att
endance is limited to 60 participants.\n\nParticipants are expected to att
end all School events and are also expected to attend the ASA meeting\, im
mediately following on 7-11 May 2018\, to deepen their understanding of a
specific field of acoustics and become better acquainted with scientific w
ork in other fields. ASA School attendees are required to be an author on
an abstract for presentation at the ASA meeting in Minneapolis either as a
lecture or poster presentation. A certificate of attendance will be prese
nted to participants at the close of the School.\n\nCosts and Transportati
