DESCRIPTION:Under Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights
  of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)\, people with disabilities enjoy le
 gal capacity — the capacity for rights and capacity to act — on an equ
 al basis with others in all aspects of life. Supported Decision-Making (SD
 M) is a framework that supports this right and helps individuals with disa
 bilities make choices about their own lives with support from a team of pe
 ople. Supported Decision-Making is an alternative to guardianship.\n\nIn t
 his episode\, thought leaders Peter Blanck\, Ph.D.\, J.D. and Jonathan Mar
 tinis\, Esq.\, J.D. of the Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) at Syracuse Univer
 sity\, will discuss recent court cases where rights were restored and Supp

 tionally recognized expertise and leadership on SDM\, representing the int
 erests of and receiving input from thousands of older adults and people wi
 th I/DD. They have applied SDM in groundbreaking legal cases\, developed e
 vidence-based outcome measures\, successfully advocated for changes in law
 \, policy and practice to increase self-determination and demonstrated SDM
